Imphal: An FIR has been lodged in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district following an alleged ‘gun salute’ conducted during a memorial event for victims of the ongoing ethnic violence in the state, police said on Sunday.
According to officials, five single-barrel firearms and camouflage uniforms were recovered during raids in Saikul, where the salute reportedly took place on Saturday.
The event marked the second anniversary of the outbreak of ethnic clashes that have gripped the northeastern state since May 2023.
“The gun salute was carried out by armed individuals during a commemorative gathering held in the Kuki-majority region of Kangpokpi,” a senior police officer said.
The state observed widespread shutdowns and mass gatherings on May 3, marking two years since violence erupted between the Imphal Valley-based Meitei community and the Kuki-Zo groups residing in the hill districts.
In a statement, police confirmed that a case has been registered in connection with the incident and that local community leaders and elders have been summoned for questioning.
“Search operations are underway to apprehend those involved,” the officer added.
Authorities have confirmed that the organizers of the event will face legal action.

So far, more than 260 people have lost their lives and thousands have been displaced due to the ethnic conflict between the two communities.
Earlier this year, on February 13, the central government imposed President’s Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. The state assembly, whose term runs until 2027, remains under suspended animation.
