Imphal: Former Manipur Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh on February 1 launched a new political outfit, National People’s Party Tera Lai (NPP-TL), after parting ways with the Conrad K. Sangma-led NPP.

Joykumar launched the new party and hoisted its flag at the office premises of Mayol Energy Pvt. Ltd. at Iroishemba in Imphal West district. He alleged that the Meghalaya Chief Minister-led NPP had failed to adequately address the issues and challenges facing Manipur.

The split follows organisational changes in the NPP in November 2025, when former Member of Parliament Lorho S. Pfoze was appointed president of the Manipur state unit, along with several others in key party positions, sidelining Joykumar.

After assuming charge as president of the new party, Y. Joykumar said an application seeking registration of NPP-TL with the Election Commission was submitted on December 26, 2025. He said the EC acknowledged receipt of the application on January 6, 2026, and that the process for recognising NPP-TL as a political party is currently underway.

He said the opening of the party office and hoisting of the party flag were part of the steps being taken to fulfil requirements for recognition. Joykumar added that the decision to float the new party was taken at a meeting held on December 4, 2025.

Looking ahead to the 2027 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, Joykumar said NPP-TL would field more than 25 candidates and expressed confidence that the party would perform strongly and play a key role in the formation of the next state government.

At present, the sixty-member Manipur Legislative Assembly has six legislators belonging to the NPP.

He vowed to serve the people without bias and described the party as an inclusive force aimed at strengthening unity in Manipur.
