Five prominent civil society organizations from the Imphal Valley, led by the All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO), are set to hold a mass rally on December 10, calling for the repeal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and the restoration of peace in the state.

The rally coincides with International Human Rights Day, a globally recognized observance advocating for fundamental human rights.

Addressing the media, Pratap Leishangthem, convenor of the organizing bodies, said, “On this occasion, we are raising our voices against the reimposition of AFSPA and to demand the restoration of normalcy in Manipur.”

AFSPA, a controversial law granting sweeping powers to the armed forces in disturbed areas, has faced intense criticism over the years for alleged human rights violations.

The rally signifies growing discontent within the state, which has seen prolonged unrest and socio-political turmoil.

International intervention sought in disappearance case

Adding to the tensions, the Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has approached the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, seeking intervention in the mysterious case of Laishram Kamalbabu.

Kamalbabu reportedly went missing from an army camp under suspicious circumstances.

CORE has demanded an impartial investigation into his disappearance, emphasizing the need for accountability and transparency.

In its appeal to the UN, CORE highlighted the urgent need for international attention to ensure justice in the matter.

The organization’s efforts reflect a broader demand for increased scrutiny of alleged human rights violations under AFSPA.

Internet ban extended

In a parallel development, the Manipur government has extended its ban on mobile internet services in nine conflict-affected districts until December 9, citing security concerns.

The districts affected by the order include Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl, and Jiribam.

An order issued by the Home Department on Saturday stated that the decision was based on an assessment of the prevailing law and order situation and its potential link to the use of internet services.

The suspension of mobile data services, including VSATs and VPNs, will continue until 5:15 pm on December 9, in the interest of public safety.

The ongoing internet suspension highlights the fragile state of peace in the region and its impact on communication and daily life for residents.

Rally reflects broader call for justice

The planned rally against AFSPA underscores the deep-seated frustrations among Manipur’s civil society groups, which have long sought the law’s repeal.

The participation of multiple organizations signals a united front in their demand for justice, accountability, and the restoration of stability in the state.

As tensions persist and international attention grows, the rally on Human Rights Day is poised to amplify voices calling for a resolution to Manipur’s complex challenges.
