Imphal: In a significant political shift in Manipur, three senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including two former legislators, joined the Congress at a function in New Delhi.

The three leaders are Y Surchandra Singh, ex-MLA of 37-Kakching Assembly Constituency; L Radhakishore Singh, ex-MLA of 25-Oinam Assembly Constituency; and Uttamkumar Ningthoujam of 28-Thanga Assembly Constituency.

The former BJP MLAs crossed over to the Congress during the event at the AICC headquarters in the national capital on Monday.

The leaders were welcomed into the party fold in the presence of AICC in-charge of Manipur, Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, and state Congress president K Meghachandra Singh.

“Their decision to leave the BJP comes in the backdrop of widespread unhappiness over the BJP’s mishandling of Manipur’s crisis and reflects a growing conviction that only the Congress Party can provide peace, stability, and inclusive governance in the State,” said a release issued by Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka, Member of Parliament and AICC In-charge of Manipur, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura.

Ulaka stated that their entry would further strengthen the Congress Party in Manipur and across the Northeast, bringing valuable political and professional experience to the organisation.
