IMPHAL: Amidst the clutter of reports on the ongoing violence in Manipur, a piece of news brought some much-needed relief to the sports fans in the state.
In a historic moment on Monday, the Assam Rifles launched of its inaugural women polo team in Imphal.
Composed of six women soldiers from Manipur, the team was launched in a ceremony graced by the presence of Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the force’s Inspector General (south) head office in Mantripukhri.
The six players of the polo team – riflewomen Victoria Oinam, H Pitu Devi, Thangjam Bindi Chanu, Veronica Oinam, Mangangcha Mutum Enourembi, and M Laxmi Devi – were selected through a rigorous process in 2023 as part of the Assam Rifle’s sports recruitment drive.
“These remarkable women have dedicated the past year to training not only as soldiers but also honing their abilities in Manipuri Polo,” a statement issued by the paramilitary force added.
The event witnessed a notable turnout of dignitaries from various civil and police departments, local political leaders, sports enthusiasts, NCC cadets, and students from various schools and colleges.
Commending Assam Rifles for their efforts in promoting gender equality and fostering regional harmony through sports, Governor Uikey praised the initiative, while Lieutenant General PC Nair, Director General of Assam Rifles, highlighted the importance of women in every fields.
Major General Ravroop Singh, SM, IGAR (S), noted that the Mahila Polo Team’s initiative extends beyond sports, serving as an inspiration for future generations.
The launch of the Assam Rifles Mahila Polo Team is a significant milestone in the Force’s history, reflecting its commitment to women empowerment and preserving Manipur’s rich cultural heritage.
It’s worth noting that the modern game of polo was originated in Manipur.
Mapal Kangjeibung in Imphal city stands as the oldest living polo ground in the world, adding historical significance to the launch of the Mahila Polo Team comprising women soldiers from the state.
