Imphal: As incessant rains continue to flood parts of Manipur, particularly in and around Imphal, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles have taken the lead in relief and rescue operations under the ongoing ‘Operation Jal Rahat-II’.
Since May 31, troops have been working relentlessly across flood-hit areas in Imphal East and West districts, often initiating rescue missions even before formal requests were made by civil authorities.
Operating under extremely challenging conditions, the forces have so far evacuated more than 2,500 civilians to safety.
One of the most significant efforts took place in the Wangkhei area, where nearly 800 residents were rescued.
At the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), a major state-run hospital, around 750 people, including 15 critically ill patients, were successfully evacuated as floodwaters entered the premises.
Similar efforts were carried out in several other localities, including Khitai Chingangbam Leikai, Laishram Leikai, Lamlong, and Heinjang, where rescue teams had to navigate rapidly rising waters and hazardous terrain following a breach in the Imphal River embankment.
In these areas, hundreds were brought to safety, including vulnerable individuals like women and children.

According to a defence spokesperson, an additional 408 people were evacuated from various flood-affected pockets in Imphal East and West, bringing the total number of rescued individuals to over 2,500.
The spokesperson emphasised the continued commitment of the Indian Army and Assam Rifles to providing humanitarian aid, including medical support and essential supplies, as flood conditions persist across the state.
