IMPHAL: Amidst heightened tensions in the state and reimposed curfew in twin-districts of Imphal, Chief Minister N Biren Singh informed that Union Home Minister has assured him that perpetrators of the recent kidnapping and killing of two young Meiteis will be brought to book.
“The commitment from both central and state governments towards this case is unwavering. Shahji asserted the gravity of this matter and his determination to bring those responsible to justice,” Singh told the local press, citing Amit Shah’s personal phone call to him.
Meanwhile, an elite CBI team, spearheaded by Special Director Ajay Bhatnagar, arrived in Manipur to initiate the investigation on Wednesday. Although the specifics about their course of action remain undisclosed, their immediate engagement showcases the urgency surrounding the case.
Following the distressing discovery of the bodies of the two youths, photos of which went viral on social media earlier this week, Imphal witnessed two days of turbulent protests by students and young citizens starting Tuesday. These clashes left over 60 injured and culminated in massive uproar throughout the Imphal valley.
Addressing the recent conflicts, Singh stated that any unjustified actions by the security forces against protestors would not be tolerated. He emphasized the need for demonstrations to remain non-violent and urged citizens to avoid hyper-sensitive zones.
“While we understand the depth of emotion and grief, agitations must be peaceful and carried out in the appropriate places,” Singh commented. He also mentioned that several law enforcement officers were injured by objects thrown by a few miscreants amidst the demonstrating students.
The chain of events began with the youths’ disappearance on July 6, and the case was handed to the CBI on August 28. Singh had confirmed the arrival of CBI officials to investigate the case just a night before their arrival.
Recent events have led to the cancellation of curfew relaxations in the districts of Imphal East and West, with an indefinite timeline on its reinstatement.
