IMPHAL: Skeletal remains of a 17-year-old youth, presumably killed in May 2023 during the onset of the ethnic clashes in Manipur, were recovered from a village in Chandel district bordering Myanmar on February 1.
Decomposed parts of the victim, Ngangom Nevy’s body was found after a three-hour-long search launched when a video, suggesting a beheading, went viral on social media on January 30, as reported by the local press.
The Manipur Police identified the video’s location and conducted a renewed search involving the 37 Assam Rifles and Kakching District Police team, led by Kakching District Additional SP Law and Order and successfully recovered the human remains from a drain in Sokom Village.

Clothes seen in the video appeared to match those recovered, the police told a national news agency, adding, “forensic experts are examining the remains to confirm the identity”.
The agency also reported that the body has been deposited at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Science (JNIMS) mortuary in East Imphal.
Nevy’s family has reportedly identified the body based on the clothes he was wearing.
Meanwhile, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in response to the tragic killing of Nevy has identified one Thangboi Haokip as the perpetrator.
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club on February 1, JAC Convenor Aheibam Chanthoi urged the prompt arrest of the accused and all other individuals involved in the brutal murder.
Additionally, she called for the provision of necessary compensation to support the grieving family of the victim.
