Guwahati: On Republic Day, the national flag is ‘unfurled’ by the President of India, and on Independence Day, Prime Minister of India ‘hoists’ the tricolor.
Did you know that there is a basic difference between ‘unfurling’ and ‘hoisting’ the national flag?
On Republic Day, the tricolor is tied at the top of the flagpole. And the President of India ‘unfurls’ it.
Republic Day marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950. The flag is ‘unfurled’ as a symbolic gesture to renew the commitment to the principles laid down in the Constitution.
And on the Independence Day, the Prime Minister ‘hoists’ the flag from the bottom of the pole.
The ‘hoisting’ of the tricolour on Independence Day symbolises the rise of a new nation, patriotism, and freedom from colonial rule.
Both the ceremonies, although dissimilar in execution, hold huge significance in commemorating India’s journey toward freedom and its evolution as a sovereign nation.
