Organising a trip to Meghalaya, the “Abode of the Clouds”, but feeling uncertain about where to start? You’re not alone. Meghalaya, with its captivating landscapes, breathtaking waterfalls, national parks, and nature’s marvels like living root-bridges, invites a thoughtful itinerary. Yet, with so much to discover, creating a perfect plan may seem like an endless pursuit. In essence, a visit to Meghalaya is an ongoing surprise, where wonders unfold at every turn. To help you navigate, here’s a simple list of six must-visit places in Meghalaya. Read on and let the adventure begin!

Kyllang Rock

Located approximately 78 km from Shillong, Kyllang Rock, a colossal formation made of red stone, graces the West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya. Rising 5400 feet above sea level and spanning around 1000 feet in width, this massive granite structure holds significance in Khasi folklore. Serving as a prominent attraction in Meghalaya, Kyllang Rock offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the region. Ascending to the summit allows visitors to bask in the splendour of the surrounding landscape.

Krem Liat Prah

In the heart of the Jaintia Hills lies Krem Liat Prah, India’s longest natural cave, a geological marvel stretching over an impressive 31 km, awaits explorers. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by the colossal “Aircraft Hangar”, a vast trunk passage that commands attention with its sheer enormity, leaving all who explore it in awe. Delving deeper, narrower passageways branch out, creating a complex network that leads to regions with evocative names like “God’s Wine Cellar” and “Alien’s Chamber”, reflecting the enthusiasm and reverence of those intrepid enough to explore its depths. Krem Liat Prah transcends the label of a mere cave; it stands as a labyrinthine cathedral, a testament to the hidden grandeur of Earth.

Cherrapunji (Sohra)

Sohra earns its reputation as one of the wettest places on earth, experiencing the highest annual rainfall. Tourists flock here from around the globe to witness the awe-inspiring Dain-Thlen, Kynrem, and Nohkalikai waterfalls, renowned as the iconic cascades of Cherrapunji. The town boasts some of the finest waterfalls in Meghalaya, making it a prime destination. Among the top tourist spots in Meghalaya, Sohra is adorned with attractions such as the living-root bridges, Mawsmai Cave, Seven Sisters Falls, an eco-park, and a garden of caves.

Balpakram National Park

A must-visit in Meghalaya, Balpakram National Park is hailed as a traveller’s haven. Often dubbed the “Land of Spirits”, this park beckons explorers seeking to delve into the rich biodiversity it offers. Counted among Meghalaya’s premier tourist destinations, Balpakram National Park is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers, offering glimpses of red panda, wild buffalo, elephant, tiger, deer, leopards, wild cows, marbled cat, and rare species like lesser panda, Indian bison, and sterow.

Double-decker Living Root Bridge

Nestled in Sohra, the double-decker living root bridge is renowned for its unique structure crafted from the roots of an Indian rubber tree. Stretching 3 km at an elevation of 2400 feet, the bridge provides a breathtaking experience as the Umshiang River flows beneath it. Dating back around 200 years, this natural wonder accommodates only 50 people at a time. The descent to the bridge involves navigating 3500-3600 steps, both to the bridge and from the base town of Tyrna, situated 20 km from town.

Don Bosco Museum

For those eager to unravel the cultural history of the state, the Don Bosco Museum in Shillong stands as a seven-storied testament. Boasting 17 galleries, this museum offers a captivating journey through the lifestyle of Northeast. Exhibits include an extensive array of arts, artifacts, costumes, weapons, and crafts, showcasing the diverse cultures and traditions of Meghalaya. Recognised as one of the finest in Asia, the Don Bosco Museum is a must-visit cultural hub in Meghalaya.
