From Diet to Sleep: Six essentials for better hair health
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Shiny, strong hair is often seen as a sign of beauty—but more importantly, it reflects overall health and daily habits. From stress and pollution to poor diet and harsh styling, modern lifestyles take a toll on hair health, leading to hair fall, dryness and premature greying. While no single product can work miracles, adopting a few consistent, science-backed practices can make a visible difference over time. Here are six healthy tips that experts say can help keep your hair resilient and full of life.

Nourish Hair from Within

Healthy hair begins with a balanced diet. Proteins, iron, zinc, biotin and vitamins A, C, D and E play a crucial role in hair growth and strength. Including eggs, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fruits, whole grains and pulses in daily meals helps nourish hair follicles from within. Staying hydrated is equally important, as dehydration can make hair brittle and dull.

Be Gentle While Washing

Overwashing or using harsh shampoos can strip the scalp of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Hair specialists recommend washing hair two to three times a week using a mild, sulphate-free shampoo. Lukewarm water is preferable, as hot water can weaken hair strands and irritate the scalp.

Oil and Massage the Scalp

Regular oiling improves blood circulation to the scalp, strengthens roots and reduces dryness. Oils such as coconut, almond, castor or sesame are known for their nourishing properties. A gentle massage for 10–15 minutes once or twice a week can also help relieve stress—another major contributor to hair fall.

Limit Heat and Chemical Treatments

Frequent use of hair dryers, straighteners, curlers and chemical treatments can damage the hair cuticle, causing split ends and breakage. Letting hair air-dry whenever possible and using heat-protectant products when styling can reduce damage. Opting for natural hairstyles over aggressive treatments helps hair recover and grow stronger.

 Manage Stress and Sleep Well

Chronic stress can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to excessive hair fall. Practices such as yoga, meditation, walking or even simple breathing exercises can help keep stress levels in check. Adequate sleep—at least seven to eight hours a night—allows the body, including hair follicles, to repair and regenerate.

Trim Regularly and Avoid Tight Hairstyles

Regular trims every six to eight weeks help remove split ends and prevent further breakage. Avoiding very tight ponytails, braids or buns is also important, as constant pulling can weaken hair roots and cause traction alopecia over time. Using wide-toothed combs and detangling hair gently, especially when wet, can further reduce damage.

Hair health is not about quick fixes but about consistency and care. Small changes in diet, daily routines and styling habits can gradually restore hair’s natural strength and shine. With patience and the right practices, healthy hair becomes less of a dream and more of a long-term reality.
