Crafting their path: Women who have turned passion into a unique niche
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

From home baking and fashion to jewellery design, makeup artistry, clay crafts, food entrepreneurship, photography, graphic design, wellness coaching, and digital content creation, women have defied societal expectations, embraced their creativity, and carved out spaces of empowerment for themselves and others.

This International Women’s Day, we shine a spotlight on few inspiring women from Assam who have turned their passion into thriving businesses.

Their journeys remind us that determination, confidence, and vision can transform dreams into reality, and that women are shaping Assam’s creative and business landscape like never before.

Dimpal Das – Homebaker

Dimpal Das from Guwahati began her baking journey during the 2020 lockdown. With a Master of Commerce degree and a corporate background, she never imagined that baking would become her profession. “I just loved to bake,” she says. By 2022, realizing her potential in the field, Dimpal started her own training classes for students, establishing a home-based academy.

Even without a physical shop, Dimpal focuses on health-conscious baking and strives to give her cakes a “home-touch.” She shares, “I’m able to serve people in my business that is what attracted me towards this business. It is also a compliment for me. And I have also received good response from people.”

On Women’s Day, she urges, “We must always keep our grab in the society, leaving aside who our parents or husband is. You should always be confident and never keep fear in your mind.”

Dr. Upasana Thakuria – Jewellery Designer

From Bongaigaon, Dr. Upasana Thakuria has been living in Guwahati for the past nine years. A dentist with clinics in Guwahati and Kamrup rural, she launched her Assamese jewellery business in 2024 under the online brand gohona.asom. She designs her jewellery herself, collaborating with makers in Barpeta.

Dr. Thakuria emphasizes the importance of independence for women: “In today’s world a second option is very important. And as you women you need to stand on your feet.”

She says, “As a women we are very proud. Keep attitude positive and believe in yourself.” Her work combines traditional inspiration with contemporary design, reflecting her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Puja Deka – Makeup Artist

Puja Deka from Nagaon began learning makeup from her mentor Dilip Phukan and later joined a news organization in Guwahati in 2014, providing makeup services to news anchors and clients outside the office. Over the years, she has gained recognition not just in Guwahati but across the state. She has also attended high-profile events like Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani’s wedding and even witnessing Rihanna’s concert, all thanks to her craft.

Reflecting on her journey, she says, “According to me, I have achieved a bit not much. But I will strive for success. But yes I have got an identity for myself.”

She believes that hard work and determination are key to success: “We need to work hard and with determination.”

Sumee Kalita – Fashion Designer

Sumee Kalita’s journey into fashion design began in the 2020 lockdown. Initially stitching at home for personal interest, she quickly gained orders as word of her work spread. To hone her skills professionally, she completed an online fashion design course from an institute in Surat.

Sumi’s creations have gone viral on social media, attracting orders not just from Assam and India, but internationally – from countries like the USA and Australia. She runs her business with two co-workers and plans to open a store in the future.

She credits her fiancé for his support during lockdown: “He was the one who helped me in delivering the orders, took me everywhere.”

On Women’s Day, she says, “Women should utilize their power that God has given. Women itself is a big word. We can also stay at home and work online in today’s world.”

Kongkona and Tilottama Gogoi – Purple Glitzy Clay Crafts

Mother-daughter duo from Chandmari, Guwahati, started Purple Glitzy in January 2024, focusing on clay accessories, jewellery, upcycled décor, crochet flowers, and scrunchies. Their work reflects patience, creativity, and a commitment to craftsmanship.

Kongkona shares that her mother initially lacked confidence, but customer appreciation boosted her morale. She adds, “Ladies must be independent and achieve all dreams they have.”

Their business is entirely social media-driven, demonstrating how passion combined with digital tools can create sustainable ventures.

Aditi Buragohain – Darika Food and Beverage

Aditi Buragohain has transformed Assam’s indigenous fruits into a successful enterprise through her brand, Darika Food and Beverage. From homemade fruit wines to jams, pickles, and squashes, all free from artificial chemicals – Aditi’s business supports local farmers and empowers women entrepreneurs.

Aditi’s journey began with a simple experiment – making wine from homegrown passion fruits. Encouraged by friends and family, she turned her passion into a business, focusing on sustainability and community development. Darika now supports local farmers, empowers women entrepreneurs, and showcases Assam’s rich fruit diversity.

Her dedication has earned her recognition, including showcasing her products at World Food India and other prominent events.

On this Women’s Day, the experiences of these women serve as a reminder that societal expectations, circumstances, or initial fear should never limit one’s potential. With confidence, perseverance, and creativity, women can transform challenges into opportunities, create meaningful impact in their communities, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

These trailblazers from Assam stand as living proof that when women believe in themselves and pursue their passions relentlessly, they can achieve extraordinary heights and redefine what is possible.
