Will Ranbir Kapoor or Allu Arjun be the next Disco Dancer?

Now this would be the biggest headline if it fructifies. The buzz is that director B Subhash, who rewrote history with the Mithun Chakraborty-starrer Disco Dancer (1982), is now working on its sequel with either current heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor or southern sensation Allu Arjun in the titular role.

The director has confirmed that the sequel is in the pipeline.

With the Bombay High Court giving the green signal to the sequel, Subhash was quoted by Pinkvilla as stating that screenwriter KV Vijayendra will work on the story and screenplay.

Subhash was embroiled in a copyright issue with Shemaroo Entertainment, but the former has tasted victory in the High Court, thus clearing all decks for the sequel.

As regards the casting, Subhash is in awe of both Ranbir and Allu for their dancing and acting prowess.

Disco Dancer catapulted Mithunda to the status of a megastar after a series of duds. The movie also starred Kim, Om Puri, Karan Razdan and Rajesh Khanna (in a cameo).

With foot-tapping music by Bappi Lahiri, the film also set the trend of introducing Disco music in Bollywood.

Songs like I am a Disco Dancer, Yaad Aa Raha, Jimmy Jimmy and others earned Mithin global popularity, especially in the then Soviet Union.

It would also be noteworthy that Disco Dancer was the first Indian film to surpass the Rs 100-crore mark worldwide.

Budgeted at Rs 2 crore, the movie grossed Rs 6.42 crore in India, but its Soviet Union (before it was dismantled) collections were Rs 94.42 crore, taking its overall figures to Rs 100.82 crore.

In fact, it also shattered Sholay’s worldwide box-office figures of Rs 50 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film before Hum Aapke Hai Koun! overtook the musical drama with worldwide figures of Rs 135 crore.
