Shillong: Gyanada Kakati (Biadow), the iconic Assamese actor and singer, passed away at the age of 93 on the evening of Wednesday, at Shillong, Meghalaya.
She breathed her last at 10:42 pm, leaving behind a legacy that spanned more than seven decades in the world of cinema and music.
Kakati’s illustrious career began in 1949 when she ventured into acting, quickly becoming a household name in Assamese cinema.
Her remarkable contributions to both Assamese and Bengali film industries made her a revered figure in regional cinema.
Among her most notable achievements, Kakati was nominated for the prestigious Berlin Film Festival in 1960 for her performance in the critically acclaimed Assamese film Puberun, which remains a defining milestone of her career.
Despite stepping away from the limelight in later years, Kakati remained an active part of the vibrant, cosmopolitan society of Shillong.

She participated in various social and cultural activities, including being involved in the region’s Namghar and Bihu communities until the end of her life.
Kakati is survived by her daughter, who carries forward her mother’s artistic legacy.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Assamese cinema, but her contributions will continue to inspire generations of actors and artists.
Her final rites were performed at the Shillong Electric Crematorium on Thursday, where family, friends, and admirers gathered to pay their respects.
