Veteran actor Jaya Bachchan, who is making her much-anticipated comeback to the big screen with Queen director Vikas Bahl’s Dil Ka Darwaaza Khol Na Darling, credits the filmmaker for convincing her to take on what she calls a “crazy project.”
“I refuse to play the routine mother roles. When Vikas came to me with this crazy project, I asked him if he was sure. I have attempted comedy in the past; in Jawani Diwani, for example, there were many lighthearted moments. I always preferred to play happy characters,” the Guddi actor was quoted as saying.
The film, which blends comedy, emotion, and drama, is slated for a theatrical release later this year.
Bachchan, whose last screen appearance was in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, will be seen playing a pivotal role in the ensemble cast, which also includes Siddhant Chaturvedi, Wamiqa Gabbi, and Swanand Kirkire.
The project is backed by producers Ramesh Taurani, Harman Baweja, Rohandeep Singh, Viraj Sawant, and Ramesh Pulapaka.
Widely regarded as one of Indian cinema’s most versatile actors, Bachchan’s illustrious career includes cult classics such as Guddi, Koshish, Abhimaan, Sholay, Silsila, and Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa.
Joining her are rising stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Wamiqa Gabbi, both of whom have made a mark with critically acclaimed performances in recent years.
Siddhant shot to fame with Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, India’s official entry to the Oscars in 2020.
Though the film didn’t make it to the final shortlist, it won him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.
He has since earned praise for his roles in Bunty Aur Babli 2, Gehraiyaan, and Phone Bhoot. He recently made headlines for the trailer of Dhadak 2, in which he stars opposite Triptii Dimri.
Wamiqa Gabbi, who began her career as a child artist in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met (2007), has steadily carved out her space in the industry with acclaimed performances in Jubilee, Baby John, and Bhool Chook Maaf.
Her upcoming projects include Bhooth Bangla with Akshay Kumar and Netflix’s Rakt Brahmand: The Bloody Kingdom, a miniseries by Raj & DK, featuring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Ali Fazal.
While audiences will be eager to watch Wamiqa’s pairing with both a veteran like Bachchan and a contemporary star like Siddhant, it is Bachchan’s return that will undoubtedly be the film’s emotional and cinematic centerpiece.
Her rare screen appearances continue to resonate deeply with both critics and viewers alike.
