Bollywood classic Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, will be immortalised in London’s Leicester Square with a bronze statue – the first-ever tribute to Indian cinema in the iconic location.
The statue, showcasing the film’s memorable pose, will be unveiled this spring as part of the “Scenes in the Square” movie trail, coinciding with the 30th-anniversary celebrations of the Yash Raj Films blockbuster directed by Aditya Chopra.
Leicester Square holds special significance, having featured in the film during the scene where protagonists Raj and Simran unknowingly cross paths.
The statue will be positioned outside the Odeon cinema on the square’s eastern terrace, paying homage to the film’s connection with the area.
DDLJ’s enduring cultural impact resonates deeply with the British South Asian community and beyond.
The movie tells the story of Raj and Simran, two non-resident Indians, and their love journey spanning Europe and India, beginning at London’s King’s Cross Station.
Mark Williams, Deputy CEO of Heart of London Business Alliance, remarked, “Adding Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to the trail is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate international cinema. DDLJ is a landmark Bollywood film and its inclusion highlights Leicester Square’s diversity and its role as a global hub for film and entertainment.”

Akshaye Widhani, CEO of Yash Raj Films, expressed pride in the recognition, noting, “DDLJ redefined Indian cinema, spreading love and joy globally.
It’s an honour to have our film represented alongside Hollywood legends like Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, and Laurel & Hardy.”
As a testament to DDLJ’s legacy, a musical adaptation, Come Fall In Love – The DDLJ Musical, will premiere at the Manchester Opera House on May 29, 2025.
