Imphal: The subject of Manipuri Film has been added to the syllabus of the BA Manipuri course at Rabindranath Tagore University.
The university is a public state university in Assam’s Hojai, which was established under the Rabindranath Tagore University Act, 2017.
The subject in three units, carrying 80 marks, will be taught in 20 sessions in the fifth semester Honours course of BA Manipuri in the University from 2024-25.
The syllabus covers three units: Status of Manipuri Film, Manipuri Documentary and Short Films, and Matamgi Manipur, Sanabi.
The aim of introducing this subject is to familiarize students with the trends and current status of Manipuri film in society, enlighten them about the significance and influence of Manipuri films, and help them understand the role of films in promoting Manipuri culture.
Manipuri film includes not only Meitei language movies but all the films made in different languages of the different communities in Manipur.
The Manipuri film industry was born when Matamgi Manipur by Debkumar Bose was released on 9 April 1972.
Manipuri cinema, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2022, has grown in its form and culture.

Manipur has bagged 57 National Film Awards, including 27 for feature films and 30 for non-feature (Short and Documentary) films, till 2014.
Since 1972 as many as 25 films from Manipur, comprising feature and non-features, have been selected for screening as the Best of Indian Cinema in the Indian Panorama Section of the International Film Festival of India by the Directorate of Film Festival of India.
