Actor and singer Prashant Tamang, who shot to national fame after winning Indian Idol Season 3, died in New Delhi on Sunday. He was 43.
Tamang was found unresponsive at his residence and was rushed to a hospital in Dwarka, where doctors declared him dead.
Preliminary information suggests he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, though an official medical statement is awaited. His family has not yet issued a formal response.
The news of his death was confirmed by filmmaker Rajesh Ghatani, while Darjeeling-based singer Mahesh Sewa also said Tamang had reportedly suffered a heart attack.
Tributes poured in soon after the reports were confirmed, with fans and colleagues expressing shock and grief on social media.
Many remembered him as the first Gorkha singer to win Indian Idol, praising his humility and cultural impact.
Several posts recalled his popular songs, particularly Ashare Mahinama, which many said defined their growing-up years.
Born on December 4, 1983, in Darjeeling, Prashant Tamang’s journey to fame was marked by perseverance.
Before entering the entertainment industry, he served as a constable with the Kolkata Police and performed with the force’s orchestra, honing his musical skills alongside his duties.

His breakthrough came in 2007 when he emerged as the winner of Indian Idol, a victory that earned him widespread recognition across India and neighbouring countries.

Tamang also made a mark as an actor, earning appreciation for his performance as Daniel Lecho in the second season of the web series Paatal Lok.
From his early days in uniform to becoming a widely admired singer and actor, Tamang’s life story inspired millions, particularly within the Gorkha and Nepali-speaking communities.
