Mumbai: Veteran actor Dharmendra has passed away at the age of 89, marking the end of an era for Indian cinema. Police confirmed his death on Monday morning at his Mumbai residence.
The actor, widely celebrated for his six-decade career spanning more than 300 films, had been in and out of hospital in recent weeks.
He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital after experiencing breathlessness, and had returned home for treatment earlier in the month.
Born Dharmendra Kewal Krishan Deol on 8 December 1935 in Sahnewal village, Ludhiana district, Punjab, he made his debut in Hindi cinema in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere.
His rise was steady, culminating in iconic roles such as Veeru in Sholay (1975) and memorable performances in films like Chupke Chupke and Mera Gaon Mera Desh.

Throughout his career, he was known for his versatility—effortlessly moving between action hero, romantic lead and comedic roles.

He is survived by his family and a body of work that has left a lasting mark on Hindi cinema.
