Shillong: Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has named Shillong as his favourite city in India, months after his electrifying live concert at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which drew a crowd of over 30,000.
The revelation came during a fun segment titled “Spin the Wheel with Ed Sheeran”, hosted by digital creator Shabaz Says.
When asked to pick a favourite from the Indian cities he visited, Sheeran replied instantly: “Shillong.”
The British pop star’s admiration for the Meghalaya capital runs deep. His music video for ‘Sapphire’, a global hit, showcases the scenic charm of Shillong in 27 distinct shots.
Viewers can see Sheeran experiencing daily life in the city—drinking local tea, picking fruit from vendors, lounging at Mattilang Park, and engaging in a spirited game of football with young locals.
In one memorable frame, the singer is seen aboard the iconic ‘Bus Smit’, a colourful symbol of Shillong’s traditional transport system.
Released earlier this year, Sapphire has already amassed over 120 million views on YouTube, with many fans commenting on the visual tribute to Shillong.
During the interview, Sheeran described India as a mosaic of cultures—each region offering its own language, food, and vibe—but noted that Shillong stood out with its unique blend of “culture, life, and football.”
He likened its high-spirited atmosphere to a football match between his favourite club Newcastle United and rivals Plymouth County.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has often spoken about developing the city into a premier football destination in the country.
While Sheeran’s February performance remains a highlight, his affection for the city goes beyond the stage.
Locals still talk about the day he kicked a ball around with children in a dusty field, far from the spotlights and stadium noise.
