Guwahati: The first-ever solo photography exhibition of Prof. Ankuran Dutta was organised by the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre in Colombo on January 27. Titled ‘Framing the Frameless: From Window to Infinity‘, the exhibition marks a significant moment in Prof. Dutta’s creative journey.

The exhibition was inaugurated by the Acting High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, Dr Satyanjal Pandey. Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Pandey noted that it was fascinating to see Prof. Dutta’s work across different spheres. While widely known for his contributions to culture and academia, Dr. Pandey observed that Prof. Dutta has also carved a distinct space for himself in photography, describing him as a master of many skills.

Framing the Frameless: From Window to Infinity features 32 photographs based on Prof. Dutta’s sustained observation of the ocean and clouds from a single, stationary viewpoint over a period of three years. The exhibition is unique in its quiet engagement with time, light, and season, playing subtly with the changing colours and moods of the ocean across different moments and atmospheres.

Addressing the gathering, the President of the Photographic Society of Sri Lanka, Romesh De Silva, appreciated the depth of the work and remarked that Prof. Dutta’s inner feelings of distance and melancholy were powerfully reflected in all the photographs on display.

Ven. Dr. Maitipe Wimalasara Maha Thera also spoke on the occasion, reflecting on how nature—through colour, form, and mood—becomes a profound medium for expressing human emotions. The inauguration drew close to a hundred artists, filmmakers, authors, and journalists, reflecting strong interest from the creative community.
