Veteran Bollywood icon Dharmendra, fondly known as the “He-Man” of Indian cinema, has been placed on life support at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital, sources confirmed on Monday.

The 89-year-old actor, who has been under medical care for several days, is said to be in critical condition.

Hospital sources said Dharmendra was initially admitted for a routine health check-up but was kept under close observation after doctors advised further tests.

His condition reportedly worsened over the weekend, leading to his placement on ventilator support.

The exact cause of his illness has not yet been disclosed.

Dharmendra, who turns 90 on December 8, remains one of Hindi cinema’s most beloved and enduring stars, with a prolific career spanning more than six decades and over 300 films to his credit.

Known for his charm, versatility, and unmatched screen presence, he became one of the biggest box office draws from the 1960s through the 1980s.

He rose to fame with classics such as Phool Aur Patthar, Aaye Din Bahar Ke, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Raja Jani, and Dharam Veer.

Later in his career, he successfully transitioned into character roles, appearing in acclaimed films like Life in a… Metro, Apne, Yamla Pagla Deewana, Johnny Gaddaar, and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.

The Padma Bhushan awardee, who made his debut in 1960 with Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere, holds the record for starring in the highest number of box-office hits in Hindi cinema.

On the professional front, Dharmendra was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024) alongside Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon.

His next appearance will be in Sriram Raghavan’s upcoming war drama Ikkis, co-starring Agastya Nanda, Simar Bhatia, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Sikandar Kher.

The film, based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetarpal, is slated for release in December.

Fans and colleagues from across the film fraternity have expressed concern and are praying for the veteran actor’s recovery.
