Mumbai: Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, 54, sustained multiple injuries after being attacked by an intruder with a knife at his home in Mumbai’s Bandra area during the early hours of Thursday, authorities confirmed.
Khan was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital and required surgery following the incident, which occurred around 2:30 am.
According to Dr. Niraj Uttamani, the COO of Lilavati Hospital, Khan was stabbed by an unidentified individual at his residence and was brought to the hospital at approximately 3:30 am.
“He suffered six stab wounds, two of which are deep, with one injury close to his spine,” Dr. Uttamani explained.
He added that the surgery was ongoing, led by a team of specialists, including neurosurgeon Dr. Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leena Jain, and anesthesiologist Dr. Nisha Gandhi.
The actor also had a deep wound on his wrist, requiring plastic surgery for repair.
“Two of the injuries are minor, two are intermediate, and two are deep, with one on the back near the spine,” Dr. Uttamani clarified.
A statement from Kareena Kapoor Khan’s team confirmed that the attack was part of an attempted burglary at the family’s home.
“Saif is currently in the hospital undergoing treatment for an arm injury. The rest of the family is safe,” the statement said, urging the public and media to refrain from further speculation as the police investigate.
Saif Ali Khan’s PR team also issued a statement regarding the attempted burglary.
“He is undergoing surgery and we request patience from the media and fans as this remains a police matter. We will provide updates as the situation develops.”
According to police, the intruder entered Khan’s home, where a scuffle ensued, resulting in Khan’s injuries.
Family members were reportedly present at the time. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not confirmed whether the attack was part of a robbery attempt.
The Bandra police have launched a probe into the incident. Khan is reportedly out of danger.
Saif Ali Khan is well-known for his roles in films such as Omkara, Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, and Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.
He is set to appear next in the upcoming heist drama Jewel Thief – The Red Sun Chapter.
In response to the attack, BJP spokesperson Ram Kadam emphasized that the police would hold the attacker accountable.
Meanwhile, NCP (SP) spokesperson Clyde Crasto expressed concern over the safety of high-profile individuals, suggesting that if even they are vulnerable, the situation for ordinary citizens could be worse.
He noted a perceived decline in law enforcement effectiveness in Maharashtra.
NCP (SP) Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule, a close friend of Kareena Kapoor Khan, also voiced concern over the incident.
Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe criticised the Maharashtra government for its failure to maintain law and order, questioning the safety of ordinary citizens if celebrities are forced to install bulletproof windows for protection.
He also argued that such incidents could negatively affect investment in the state.
