GUWAHATI: A thought-provoking documentary shedding light on the contentious Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and its implications in the Northeast region has been included in the Short Documentary category longlist for the prestigious One World Media Awards 2024.
Directed by Bhaskar Jyoti Das and supported by National Award-winning documentary filmmaker Utpal Borpujari, An Unknown Summer has captured attention for its exploration of the far-reaching effects of AFSPA in the region, specifically Manipur.
The documentary made its world premiere at the Slow Film Festival in the United Kingdom in November 2023, drawing praise for its powerful narrative set in the village of Phoubakchao Makha Leikai in the Imphal valley.
Set against the backdrop of March 2009, the film delves into the story of a militant known as “Azad”, presenting a compelling narrative that unfolds over 24 minutes.
Filmed in Meiteilon with English subtitles, the documentary offers a poignant portrayal of the human impact of the controversial legislation.
The One World Media Awards, renowned for recognising excellence in independent journalism and documentary filmmaking from around the world, have received over 500 entries from 117 countries this year.
The longlist selection process involved meticulous consideration by judges to identify stories that challenge stereotypes, reshape narratives, and foster cultural connections.
“We are thrilled to announce the Longlist for our 15 categories, representing the best of global journalism and storytelling,” read the One World Media Awards website.
“The entries reflect a diverse range of perspectives and voices, underscoring the importance of storytelling in fostering understanding and dialogue across borders,” it added.
An Unknown Summer’s inclusion in the longlist of One World Media Awards nominations further underscores its impact and relevance in the realm of global storytelling in reference to the Northeast.
