Vyjayanthi Movies announced that Deepika Padukone will not star in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD.
Taking to Twitter, they wrote, “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, We have decided to part ways.”
The actor made headlines in 2025 for exiting and being dropped from two big-budget films.
Incidentally, both films – ‘Spirit‘ and ‘Kalki 2898 AD‘ – star Prabhas and are being mounted on a massive scale. While she exited ‘Spirit‘, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, over creative differences, Padukone was dropped from director Nag Ashwin’s ‘Kalki 2898 AD’.
Kalki 2898 AD starred Deepika alongside lead actor Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Disha Patani. Deepika had a pivotal role in the movie and was expected to star in the sequel, too.
Directed by Nag Ashwin, the film also marked her South debut. In 2024, it was the most expensive film made in India with a budget of approximately Rs 600 crore. The mythological sci-fi film was centred around Deepika’s character, SUM-80 aka Sumathi. The story follows her and her unborn child, who is believed to be Kalki, the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu. The magnum-opus achieved phenomenal success, grossing over Rs 1,100 crore and winning several accolades.

Reports suggested that Deepika Padukone had exited Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ‘Spirit’ starring Prabhas, over creative differences. While there was no official confirmation from Padukone’s team, it was reported that the filmmaker had disagreements with the actor over certain scenes, eight-hour workday demands, remuneration and profit-sharing agreements.
