Tea production declines in Assam & West Bengal in August; orthodox tea output rises

Tea production in India fell to 170.12 million kilogrammes in August 2025, compared to 184.45 million kilogrammes during the same month in 2024, according to Tea Board data.

In Assam, production slightly declined to 103.52 million kilogrammes in August 2025 from 104.46 million kilogrammes in August 2024. West Bengal also recorded a dip, with output falling to 45.90 million kilogrammes from 56.08 million kilogrammes in the previous year.

Taking Assam and West Bengal together, tea production in north India during August 2025 declined to 153.99 million kilogrammes as compared to 166.15 million kilogrammes in the previous month of 2024.

In South India, total tea production decreased to 16.13 million kilogrammes from 18.30 million kilogrammes during the same period.

Category-wise, the production of CTC (Crush, Tear, Curl) tea in north India fell to 135.59 million kilogrammes in August 2025 from 150.76 million kilogrammes a year earlier. In the south, CTC output dropped to 13.13 million kilogrammes from 15.41 million kilogrammes in August 2024.

In contrast, orthodox tea production in the country rose to 19.22 million kilogrammes in August 2025, up from 15.81 million kilogrammes in the same month of 2024.
