Tata Motors is gearing up to reintroduce India’s most beloved SUV— the Tata Sumo—to the Indian market.
According to industry insiders, Tata Motors might reintroduce this iconic vehicle in the second half of 2025, much to the delight of SUV enthusiasts across the country.
The upcoming 2025 Tata Sumo represents a significant departure from its predecessor, blending classic design elements with advanced technology.
The Tata Sumo, which was first launched in 1994, quickly became a household name in India. Known for its rugged build, spacious interior, and reliable performance, the Sumo was a common sight on Indian roads for years.
Its boxy, utilitarian styling and proven off-road capabilities made it a staple on the country’s roads for over two decades.
Its versatility made it popular among families, taxi operators, and even government agencies. However, as emission norms tightened and consumer preferences evolved, the Sumo was eventually phased out, leaving a void in the market for a tough, affordable, and spacious SUV.
While Tata Motors is yet to make an official announcement, if the rumours are to be believed, the new Tata Sumo will be a far cry from its utilitarian predecessor, boasting modern features and a contemporary design while retaining the practicality that made it famous.
The 2025 Sumo will feature modern design with the latest in automotive technology and luxury amenities.
The vehicle is rumoured to be both long and wide, potentially competing with SUVs like the Renault Duster in terms of road presence. Inside, the new Sumo is expected to offer comfortable seating for five passengers, with ample boot space for luggage – a feature that made the original Sumo a favourite for long road trips.
In line with modern automotive standards and regulations, the new Tata Sumo is expected to come equipped with a host of safety features. Industry experts anticipate the inclusion of multiple airbags, seat belts for all passengers, and advanced safety systems like ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution).
While details about the powertrain remain scarce, automotive analysts speculate that the new Sumo might offer both petrol and diesel engine options to cater to diverse consumer preferences. There’s also buzz about the possibility of a future electric variant, aligning with Tata’s push towards electrification.
Tata Motors might be planning to price the new Sumo very competitively. Speculations suggest a price range between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 5.5 lakh for the base variant, with higher trims naturally commanding a premium. At this price point, the new Sumo could potentially disrupt the compact SUV market in India.
