GUWAHATI: Chairman Emeritus, Prithvi Raj Singh Oberoi, widely recognised as the doyen of Indian hospitality industry, breathed his last on Tuesday. He was 94.

In a sombre announcement, the Oberoi Group confirmed the news, stating, “It is with deep sadness that we inform the peaceful passing of PRS Oberoi, Chairman emeritus of The Oberoi Group, earlier today.”

Oberoi, affectionately known as Biki, received numerous prestigious awards and accolades throughout his illustrious career.

The Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest civilian honours, was bestowed upon him in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the country in the fields of tourism and hospitality.

“As we mourn the loss of a true icon, we also aim to celebrate the extraordinary legacy PRS Oberoi leaves behind. In the coming days, we will share details of our plans to honour and remember him,” the statement continued, expressing a commitment to preserving and commemorating Oberoi’s impactful contributions.

Additionally, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the International Luxury Travel Market (ILTM), a proof of his extraordinary leadership and vision.

The “Corporate Hotelier of the World” award by HOTELS magazine USA, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 6th International Hotels Investment Forum in Berlin, and recognition at the Forbes India Leadership Awards, Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence, CNBC TV 18 India Business Leader Awards, and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards further underscored Oberoi’s influential presence in the business world.

The cremation ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Bhagwanti Oberoi Charitable Trust, Oberoi Farm, Kapashera, beginning at 4 pm on Tuesday.

The statement extended a heartfelt invitation to those acquainted with Oberoi to attend and pay their respects. Furthermore, prayers in his memory will be held at Oberoi hotels and the Corporate Office.

Born in New Delhi in 1929, PRS Oberoi was the son of late Rai Bahadur MS Oberoi, the founder of The Oberoi Group.

Holding the position of Executive Chairman of EIH Ltd for an extended period, he played a pivotal role in the group’s flourishing success.

As the industry mourns his loss, the legacy of PRS Oberoi will undoubtedly endure as an integral part of India’s hospitality history.
