New Delhi: India has emerged as a global powerhouse in fisheries, ranking as the world’s second-largest fish producer and contributing about 8 per cent to the global output, according to the government.

The country also holds the second position in global aquaculture production.

Since 2015, when the Centre rolled out a series of targeted schemes to boost the sector, cumulative investments worth Rs. 38,572 crore have been approved.

As a result, India’s total fish production has surged to 195 lakh tonnes, registering an impressive annual growth rate of 8.74 per cent.

Seafood exports have also witnessed steady growth, touching Rs. 60,524 crore in 2023–24.

To further accelerate progress, 34 fisheries production and processing clusters have been notified across the country.

The Department of Fisheries (DoF) is now working towards developing species-specific clusters aimed at strengthening the value chain and incorporating advanced technologies.

Between April and September this year, the DoF conducted a nationwide series of virtual interactions involving more than 15,000 fishers and fish farmers from all 34 states and Union territories.

Led by Fisheries Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, the exercise provided a platform for stakeholders from coastal, inland, hilly, island, and northeastern regions to share their experiences and concerns.

Participants underscored the need for improved access to quality fish seed, affordable feed, brood banks, and local feed mills.

They also called for better infrastructure facilities such as cold storage, hatcheries, cage culture systems, transport, and solar-powered aquaculture support.

Several participants also drew attention to the potential of technology-driven solutions — including drones for live fish transport, satellite-based advisories for fishermen’s safety, and digital tools to identify potential fishing zones.

Fishermen across the country appreciated the government’s initiative of installing transponders free of cost in fishing vessels.

These devices, officials said, have proven vital in providing real-time weather alerts, cyclone warnings, and Potential Fishing Zone (PFZ) updates, helping fishermen navigate safely and efficiently.
