Indian tea exports saw an 18.4 percent surge in value in 2025, reaching Rs 8,488.43 crore, supported by a weaker rupee against major foreign currencies such as the dollar and the euro and record shipments.
According to trade data, the total value of cumulative exports rose from Rs 7,167.41 crore to Rs 8,488.43 crore in 2025. For the first time, exporters earned more than Rs 300 per kg an average, marking an 8.1 percent rise from the previous year’s average price of Rs 279.79 per kg.
The production of tea increased marginally in the country, including Assam, in 2025.
Provisional data from the Tea Board of India shows that India exported 280.40 million kg during the January-December period in 2025, up from 256.17 million kg in the same period the previous year.
Export earnings during the period at Rs 8,488.43 crore were also higher than Rs 7,167.41 crore in January-December 2024.

North India, comprising Assam and Bengal, recorded strong gains in exports in 2025, while South India posted a drop. The North India Zone alone exported 191.11 million kg of tea, and the South India Zone exported 89.29 million kg of tea in 2025.
The calculation of the tea exported from Assam takes place in the North India Zone. In the year 2024, India as a whole exported 256.17 million kg of tea with a unit price of Rs 279.79 per kg.
Germany and Japan, known to be connoisseurs of Darjeeling tea, continued to be the top markets in terms of price realisation, fetching far higher than the average. Exports to Germany and Japan fetched $7.65 a kilo and $5.99 a kilo, respectively, on an average.
