New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday laid the Economic Survey 2025–26 in the Lok Sabha, setting the context for the Union Budget to be presented later this week.
The Economic Survey is the government’s annual assessment of the country’s economic performance and outlook. Presented ahead of the Budget, it reviews key developments in the economy and outlines short- to medium-term growth prospects.
Prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs under the Ministry of Finance, the document is compiled under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser.

The practice of presenting the Economic Survey dates back to 1950–51, when it formed part of the Budget documents.
It was separated from the Budget in the 1960s and has since been tabled independently before the annual financial statement.
The Union Budget for 2026–27 is scheduled to be presented on Sunday. With this, Sitharaman will present her ninth consecutive Budget, marking a historic first for a woman finance minister in India.
