Apple to assemble entire iPhone 17 lineup in India as local production scales up

New Delhi: In a major push to diversify its supply chain, Apple will assemble all models of its upcoming iPhone 17 series — including the premium Pro variants — in India, marking the first time every new iPhone will be made in the country from launch.

The manufacturing drive spans five facilities across India, two of which have recently gone operational.

Sources indicated that while all models will be built locally, the high-end Pro units will be produced in smaller numbers.

Tata Group and Foxconn are at the heart of this expansion. Tata’s Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu and Foxconn’s massive new hub near Bengaluru airport are leading the effort.

Foxconn has already begun rolling out iPhone 17 units from its $2.8 billion facility in Devanahalli, its second-largest iPhone factory outside China, operating alongside its Chennai unit.

Tata, now a key Apple partner, is expected to handle nearly half of India’s iPhone production within two years.

The company stepped in after Apple faced early challenges this year, including the exit of several Chinese engineers.

Taiwanese and other international specialists were brought in to stabilize operations.

Apple’s bet on India has been paying off. Between April and July this year, iPhones worth $7.5 billion were exported from India — almost half of the $17 billion shipped in the entire previous fiscal year.

In FY 2023–24, Apple assembled iPhones worth $22 billion in India, a 60 percent jump from the previous year.

The tech giant aims to scale production to about 60 million iPhones this year, up from 35–40 million in 2024–25. Apple CEO Tim Cook underscored India’s growing role during the July earnings call, revealing that most iPhones sold in the US in June 2025 were made in India.

Industry analysts say the move strengthens India’s position as a global electronics hub.

With S&P Global estimating US iPhone sales at nearly 76 million units in 2024, Apple will need to sharply increase Indian shipments or reallocate supplies from other markets to meet demand.

Apple’s presence in India’s domestic market is also growing. Shipments rose 21.5 percent in the first half of 2025 to 5.9 million units, with the iPhone 16 emerging as the most shipped model.

In the June quarter alone, Apple’s India shipments jumped 20 percent year-on-year, giving the company a 7.5 percent market share.

Experts view the Bengaluru plant and the broader production shift as a milestone in Apple’s long-term plan to reduce dependence on China and build a stronger base in India.
