Guwahati: Bharti Airtel has achieved a significant milestone in protecting its customers across Assam and the Northeast from the growing menace of online fraud.
Within just 33 days of launching its advanced AI-powered fraud detection system, Airtel has safeguarded over 1.35 million users in the region.
The system, which is automatically enabled for all Airtel mobile and broadband users, operates seamlessly in the background.
It scans and filters potentially harmful links shared across platforms like SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, email, and browsers. Leveraging real-time threat intelligence, the platform examines over 1 billion URLs daily and blocks malicious sites in less than 100 milliseconds.
Explaining the system’s functionality, Airtel cited an example: if a user in Guwahati receives a fraudulent link such as, “Your package is delayed. Track it here: http://www.tracky0urparcell.com,” the AI instantly scans the URL.
If identified as suspicious, the system blocks access and redirects the user to a warning message reading, “Blocked! Airtel found this site dangerous!” This swift interception prevents users from falling victim to phishing scams and other online fraud.
Rabi Shankar Mishra, CEO for Assam and Northeast at Bharti Airtel, expressed confidence in the initiative, stating, “We are excited to combat emerging digital threats with the world’s first AI-driven fraud detection solution integrated into our network. This innovation ensures a safe and secure digital experience for our customers in Assam and the Northeast.”
With the region being one of India’s most digitally advanced, the threat of online fraud is prevalent across both urban and rural areas.
Cities like Guwahati, Shillong, Kohima, and Itanagar, as well as towns in districts such as Morigaon, Nagaon, and Dhubri, have reported a rise in fraudulent activities.
Scams range from phishing links to fake delivery updates and spurious banking alerts.
Airtel’s AI solution acts as a comprehensive digital shield, offering protection to users from all walks of life, including families, students, and senior citizens.

The platform also supports Assamese and other regional languages, making it highly effective in areas with low digital literacy or limited English proficiency.
This multilingual feature ensures inclusivity and ease of use for the diverse population in the region.
Since its nationwide launch, the AI system has blocked over 186,000 malicious links and protected 82.5 million users across India.
