Airtel India has vehemently refuted recent claims circulating on the dark web alleging a massive data breach affecting 375 million of its customers.
According to reports from Dark Web Informer on social media, an anonymous hacker going by the name xenZen is purportedly offering Airtel India customer data for sale.
The alleged breach, said to have occurred in June, reportedly includes extensive personal details such as mobile numbers, names, dates of birth, father’s names, addresses, email IDs, genders, nationalities, Aadhaar numbers, and other sensitive information.
This data is being advertised for sale at a price of USD 50,000 in XMR (Monero cryptocurrency).
Screenshots shared by Dark Web Informer from BreachForums, a well-known community for discussing data breaches, show a listing where the seller claims to possess the latest database of Airtel India customers.
The same individual allegedly took responsibility for a recent leak involving the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.
In response to these allegations, Airtel India issued a firm statement dismissing any breach from its systems.
“There has been a report alleging that Airtel customer data has been compromised. This is nothing short of a desperate attempt to tarnish Airtel’s reputation by vested interests,” the statement read.
The company further assured that a thorough investigation has been conducted, confirming no breach whatsoever from its end.
The incident underscores growing concerns over data security and privacy in India, particularly as more sensitive personal information becomes available on illicit platforms on the dark web.
Authorities and cybersecurity experts continue to monitor developments closely amid efforts to mitigate such risks.
For now, Airtel India remains steadfast in its assurance of safeguarding customer data integrity, highlighting its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of security and privacy for its users.
