Adani Green becomes world’s first renewable energy IPP to achieve water positivity

New Delhi: Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL) has made global history by becoming the world’s first renewable energy independent power producer (IPP) to achieve water positivity across its entire operational portfolio, which currently exceeds 14 GW in capacity.

The milestone was certified by global assurance firm Intertek following comprehensive audits across 103 operational sites and 85 water conservation locations.

AGEL reached this benchmark a full year ahead of its FY2026 target, setting a new precedent in environmental stewardship within the renewable energy sector.

Water positivity refers to the practice of replenishing more water than is consumed.

In AGEL’s case, this is especially significant given that a large portion of its solar and wind power facilities are located in some of India’s most water-stressed regions, including the arid Thar Desert and the barren expanses of Khavda in Gujarat.

Despite these environmental challenges, AGEL has implemented large-scale water conservation measures, from rainwater harvesting and pond revitalisation to the deployment of water-efficient robotic cleaning systems for solar panels.

These efforts have conserved water equivalent to 467 Olympic-sized swimming pools—enough to exceed the half-year water needs of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep.

The company reports that 85 revitalised ponds now serve over 1.23 lakh people, mainly in water-scarce communities.

Meanwhile, robotic cleaning technologies—used across 54% of AGEL’s operational capacity—save an estimated 546 million litres of water annually.

Originally aiming to make 200 MW of operational capacity water positive by FY2026, AGEL exceeded this in FY2023 itself.

Buoyed by early success, the company extended its goal to cover its entire portfolio—achieving it a year ahead of schedule.

“This milestone is more than corporate success; it is a sustainability revolution,” said an AGEL spokesperson. “We don’t just generate green energy. We build it the greenest way possible.”

AGEL’s operating portfolio is not only water positive but also certified single-use plastic-free and zero waste-to-landfill, demonstrating the company’s broader environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments.

As climate change and water scarcity increasingly impact communities worldwide, AGEL’s achievement highlights the role renewable energy companies can play in conserving natural resources while addressing the dual crises of climate and water.

With India facing some of the highest levels of water stress globally, AGEL’s approach offers a replicable model for integrating clean energy growth with responsible water management.

The company’s use of innovative technologies—including air-to-water condensation systems for drinking water—further exemplifies how sustainable practices can be embedded into industrial operations at scale.
