Guwahati: In a fresh turn to the ongoing probe into singer Zubeen Garg’s death, his wife Garima Garg on Saturday returned the postmortem report handed over to her by the police, saying it was not her “personal document” and that the investigating authorities should decide whether to make it public.
Speaking to reporters after CID Additional SP Moramee Das visited her residence to deliver the report, Garima said she wanted the investigation to continue without interference and expressed complete faith in the authorities to bring out the truth.
“I took advice and thought about it carefully. Since the investigation is ongoing, I don’t consider the report my personal document. I’ve returned it to the investigating officer. They will decide what’s best,” she said, adding that her only wish was for “a proper investigation and early justice.”
When asked about reports claiming that one of Garg’s band members, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, told police the singer was poisoned, Garima questioned his silence until now.
“If he knew something, why did he hide it for so long? If anyone is responsible, they must face the harshest punishment,” she asserted, holding back tears as she recalled her husband’s generous nature.
Garg, one of Assam’s most celebrated cultural figures, died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore on September 19 while swimming in the sea.
He had travelled there to attend the NorthEast India Festival organised by Shyamkanu Mahanta and his company.
The case took a dramatic turn after Goswami alleged that Garg was poisoned by his manager Siddharth Sharma and the event organiser.
Earlier reports had stated that the singer died by drowning.
Garima said both she and Garg’s sister, Palme Borthakur, had recorded detailed statements with the Special Investigation Team earlier in the day.
“It is my demand and prayer that Zubeen gets justice. The case must not be diverted,” she said.
The singer’s wife added that she trusted the judicial system and believed the CID was handling the probe effectively.
“Let the investigators keep the postmortem report. I have faith they will ensure justice. We just want to know every truth related to the case,” she said.

Calling Zubeen “a man of the people,” Garima said he always treated those around him like family.
“He gave love to everyone. If wrongdoing has been done to him, those responsible must be punished,” she said.
The Assam CID is investigating the case following over 60 FIRs filed across the state against Mahanta and around ten others, including Sharma, Goswami and band member Amrit Prabha.
All four have been arrested and remanded to police custody for 14 days.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has constituted a one-man judicial commission led by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court to probe the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death.
