Zubeen Garg’s ashes immersed in Brahmaputra; fans turn promoters for his final film

Guwahati: The ashes of legendary singer and actor Zubeen Garg were immersed in the Brahmaputra River on Wednesday by his wife, Garima Saikia Garg, in a quiet and deeply emotional ceremony attended by close family members, including his sister Palmee Borthakur.

The solemn ritual marked another moment of collective mourning for Assam as people across the state continue to grieve the loss of one of their most cherished cultural icons.

Even as the state bids farewell to the multifaceted artist, Zubeen’s final cinematic project, Roi Roi Binale, is nearing release — a film he passionately worked on until his last days.

Though he is not here to witness its premiere, his admirers have transformed their grief into a grassroots campaign to bring his dream to fruition.

Without any formal publicity, fans across Assam have taken it upon themselves to promote the film.

From bustling towns to remote villages, hand-pasted posters of Roi Roi Binale now adorn walls, shopfronts, and vehicles.

Volunteer groups, youth organisations, and cultural bodies have launched their own initiatives — from street announcements to social media drives — turning the film’s release into a people’s movement.

“We are not just fans; we are Assamese people carrying forward Zubeen da’s vision,” said a volunteer from Jorhat, as hundreds participated in a statewide poster drive.

Cinema hall owners across the state have also joined in tribute, planning special screenings and memorial events to honour the artist who played a pivotal role in reviving Assamese cinema over the past two decades.

For countless admirers, Roi Roi Binale represents more than a film — it is a reflection of Zubeen Garg’s enduring spirit and artistic legacy.

“This movie feels like a part of his soul. Every Assamese should see it,” said a Guwahati resident.

As anticipation builds ahead of its October 31 release, Roi Roi Binale has become a unifying force — a heartfelt tribute from the people of Assam to the man whose music, voice, and vision defined an era.
