Guwahati: The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has announced that it will not represent the accused in the case related to the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, citing social responsibility and moral duty.
The association added that providing legal support to those facing serious allegations in this case would be a “historic mistake.”
The collective decision seeks to ensure justice for Zubeen Garg, whose death in Singapore on September 19 has triggered widespread grief and raised suspicions of foul play.
According to the association, the decision is a collective mark of respect for the late musical icon and his significant contributions to the state’s culture.
Multiple FIRs have been registered across the state against organisers of the Northeast India Festival, which Garg had travelled to attend, and also against Siddhartha Sarma, the singer’s manager.
The association emphasised that only a fair and thorough investigation can establish the truth. It urged for an environment where investigating agencies can function without hindrance, underlining the need to prioritise justice over technical defence.
The state government has also constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Zubeen Garg’s death has deeply affected the Assamese community and the public, leading to calls for accountability and a thorough investigation.
