In the wake of rising global warming, the importance of regular Yoga practices has gained momentum. Yoga can secure a sustainable future for the new generations to lead a healthy life.
Long back, Charlse Darwin predicted that the world’s habitations would prove the bare truth of life — ‘survival of the fittest’. That is, only physically fit people will survive in the near future, according to Darwin.
Experts and Yoga Teachers say that this ancient practice of India can boost the ‘immunity power’ of the mind, body and soul of an individual. With regular practice of Yogic Science, a person can acquire extra energy from Mother nature. Even he or she can check common diseases in daily life.
Yoga is, indeed, the best gift of India to the world, in general. Considering its unlimited potential, the UNO has declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga (IDY) and December 21 as the World Meditation Day. The world is currently celebrating the 11th IDY this year. The main theme of this year’s IDY is “One Earth, One Health”.
Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC) and the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Northeast Zone, Guwahati, in collaboration with the Indian Yoga Culture and Yoga Therapy Centre (IYC&YTC), Maligaon, organised a mega awareness event at the Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Art and Culture, Uzanbazar, Guwahati.
Addressing the meet, Kripa Shankar Yadav, ADG, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, shed light on the urgent need and relevance of regular Yoga practices in the entire globe.
According to Yadav, the ever-growing medical burden in different hospitals of the country can be cut to a great extent by practising Yogic Science regularly.
“General masses may not come forward to participate in Yoga practice sessions. But they should be inspired and motivated to join Yoga awareness camps in a big way,” he continued.
Yogacharya Subhasish Kar, Founder-President, IYC&YTC, unveiled an interesting and the most amazing fact on the evolution, devolution, and development of systematic Yoga practices in Assam.
Kar claimed that Umachal Yoga Hospital, one of the world’s oldest hospitals, was set up on the Nilachal Hills near the Kamakhya temple in Guwahati in 1932. From here, thousands of patients have been cured since its inception. The patients were suffering from a slew of chronic diseases.
We are currently passing through the newest geopolitical crisis in the entire globe. High life risk and soaring uncertainties have created an unfavourable environment for mental peace and progress. Despite these hardships, we find a ray of hope from the young yoga teachers of Assam. The new generation of yoga teachers is widely using the new media platforms to practise and polarise ‘YOGIC SCIENCE’ in this part of Asia.
Sad to say, a large number of people across India are now falling sick more often with coughs, fevers, and other seasonal illnesses. While some believe this could be due to long Covid, others are talking about something called ‘immunity debt’.
The term was first used in 2021 when New Zealand saw a sudden rise in babies being hospitalised with RSV (a virus that causes cold-like symptoms). Experts say ‘immunity debt’ means that when people don’t come into contact with common germs for a long time, their immunity weakens.
A recent study by the University of Oxford and Peking University states that the Covid safety rules, like staying home, wearing masks, and washing hands, protected us from Covid but also stopped us from getting exposed to other viruses. Once the restrictions ended, people started falling sick more easily.
Another study by analytics firm Airfinity and Bloomberg showed that over 40 countries have seen disease outbreaks since 2020 that were 10 times worse than pre-Covid levels. Measles, once eliminated in the US, has returned. Whooping cough is rising too. Experts say this might be linked to people skipping vaccinations during the pandemic.
In a separate research paper, Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari and Dr. Rima Dada (Department of Anatomy, AIIMS, Delhi) write, “Visual health encompasses the well-being of the eyes and the optimal functioning of the visual system. While various interventions exist for managing visual health, the therapeutic role of yoga remains an area that has received limited exploration. Yoga, a mind–body practice that combines asanas, pranayama, and dhyaan (meditation), has been widely recognized for its potential benefits in promoting overall well-being and improving physical and mental health.”
Thus, Yoga is now considered a Health Science. Of late, the Government of India has made Yoga compulsory for medical students to address mental health. This was stated in a media report on March 26, 2025.
Glad to say, we can prevent common diseases by performing relevant Yoga Asanas, Pranayamas, etc. We can better apply New Media outlets for the same to save time, money and energy. We know the positive role of Yoga Teachers in Assam who have adopted the tools of ‘Dotcom Rush’ i.e., New Media platforms like YouTube channels, FB, Instagram, X, and so on.
The reason is not far to seek. The young yoga teachers are IT savvy. They can tactfully apply smartphones, laptops, tablets, etc. for teaching and training in the field of Yoga. Sometimes, they take Yoga classes for students and patients. Most of them use their YouTube channels to reach the unreached students and patients of this landlocked region of India.
Only healthy and wealthy masses are the assets of an advanced nation. Perfect preparation and continuous practice of Yoga can protect the body, mind and soul of the common people. Mass employment generation of Yoga teachers in all academic and non-academic institutions, both by the government and private agencies, may usher in a new era of hope, peace, prosperity, tranquility and, virtually, a congenial air in the NE region soon.
