Guwahati: The Assam government is set to inaugurate a state-of-the-art sports complex in Lakhimpur district as part of a broader effort to build world-class sports infrastructure across the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday.

Sharing details on social media platform X, Sarma said the upcoming facility, located around 7.5 hours from Guwahati, reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening sports development at the grassroots level.

He added that similar modern facilities are being planned in every district to support young athletes closer to their homes.

Officials said the Lakhimpur complex has been designed to meet contemporary training standards and will offer aspiring sportspersons access to quality facilities without having to travel to major cities.

The initiative is aimed at decentralising sports infrastructure and ensuring that talent from rural and remote areas is not held back due to lack of resources.

The project is part of Assam’s larger investment in the sports sector over recent years, which has seen the construction of stadiums, indoor sports halls, training centres and athlete hostels across districts.

The focus, officials said, is on creating a sustainable sporting ecosystem that enables professional training and long-term athlete development.

Sarma has consistently emphasised the role of sports in youth empowerment, discipline and career building.

The district-centric approach is expected to broaden the state’s talent base and improve Assam’s performance at national and international competitions.

Sports department officials noted that facilities such as the Lakhimpur complex will also play a key role in early talent identification through organised coaching programmes and district-level tournaments.

With the new complex nearing inauguration, the state government hopes to reinforce its message that high-quality sports infrastructure should extend beyond urban centres and that every district has the potential to emerge as a centre of sporting excellence.
