World Braille Day observed in Guwahati with assistive device distribution

Guwahati: The Directorate of Social Justice & Empowerment, Assam, commemorated World Braille Day with a meaningful event at the Guwahati Blind Higher Secondary School in Latakata, Basistha, on Saturday.

The programme highlighted the pivotal role of Braille in empowering the visually impaired and emphasised the importance of inclusivity and equal access to education and communication.

One of the key features of the event was the distribution of smartphones and smart canes to visually impaired students.

These assistive devices, provided by the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), aim to enhance mobility, foster independence, and improve access to essential resources for the beneficiaries.

The event was graced by the presence of Atul Bora, Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Dispur Constituency.

In his address, Bora underlined the significance of fostering an inclusive society that ensures equitable opportunities for all, regardless of physical challenges.

Dr. Harsha Bhattacharjee, president and trustee of Sri Sankaradeva Nethralaya, along with other dignitaries, participated in the ceremonial distribution of aids and appliances, marking a key highlight of the programme.

Bhaskar Jyoti Manta, Director of Social Justice & Empowerment, Assam, expressed his gratitude to the attendees, including dignitaries, students, and their guardians.

He underscored the importance of such events in raising awareness and inspiring collaborative efforts to address the challenges faced by individuals with visual impairments.

World Braille Day stands as a global reminder of the transformative impact of Braille in enabling equal educational opportunities and empowering visually impaired individuals.

The Directorate reiterated its commitment to advancing initiatives that enhance accessibility and foster inclusion for persons with disabilities.

The event saw active participation from students, their guardians, and officials, making it a poignant celebration of resilience, progress, and the shared vision of creating a more inclusive society.
