GUWAHATI: A 27-year-old woman was brutally stabbed to death on Thursday in broad daylight by her estranged lover, who is a married man.
The attack occurred at Nahoroni Path in the Hatigaon area of Assam’s capital city, police confirmed.
The victim, identified as Mousumi Gogoi, was attacked just outside her rented residence while she was stepping out for work, according to Assam Police Inspector General Parthasarathi Mahanta.
The assailant, who stabbed her multiple times, was apprehended shortly after the incident.
“Mousumi was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries,” Mahanta stated.
The accused, who sustained self-inflicted injuries, has also been admitted to GMCH, Mahanta added.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the attacker, a married man, was in a relationship with the victim.
A senior police official noted that Mousumi had recently discovered his marital status and distanced herself from him.
However, the accused was unwilling to end the relationship.
“Feeling rejected, the accused decided to kill her,” the official explained.
Assam DGP G P Singh addressed the incident on social media, stating: “Reference stabbing incident of a young girl at Nahorni Path, Guwahati — The assailant has been detained. He has self-stabbed and is being admitted to the hospital.”
The incident has sparked outrage in the city, raising concerns about women’s safety and the need for stricter measures to prevent such violent acts.
