Guwahati: A woman was detained in Guwahati on Monday for allegedly posting objectionable and derogatory remarks against noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg on social media, police said.

The action followed a complaint lodged by Garima Saikia Garg, the singer’s wife, with the Crime Branch of Guwahati Police against Sikha Sarma, a social media commentator. Acting on the complaint, police picked up Sarma for questioning.

“We received a complaint and immediately dispatched a team to detain the accused for questioning,” Guwahati Police DCP (Crime) Debajit Nath said, adding that an FIR has been registered and an investigation is underway.

According to sources, the complaint refers to a series of Facebook posts allegedly made by Sarma over a period of time, which were described as demeaning and personal in nature.

The posts sparked outrage among fans and sections of the public, leading to calls for legal action.

Speaking to reporters after filing the complaint, Garima said the family had initially chosen to ignore the posts but decided to approach the police after the comments crossed acceptable limits.

She alleged that the remarks amounted to defamation, criminal intimidation, hate speech and communal provocation, with the potential to disturb public order.

She further claimed that objectionable comments were also made against her family members, calling the posts unacceptable and deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Assamese people.

Meanwhile, members of the All Assam Zubeen Garg Fan Club also reached Dispur police station to submit a separate complaint against Sarma.

Fan club president Piku Borgohain said the controversial posts appeared to be an attempt to divert attention at a time when the public was united in support of the singer.

Police said further action would be taken based on the outcome of the investigation.
