Dibrugarh: A 62-year-old Adivasi woman sustained critical injuries after being brutally assaulted by a group of individuals in Assam’s Dibrugarh district over allegations of practicing witchcraft, according to police reports on Tuesday.
The victim, a resident of the Romai tea estate in the Lahowal police station area, was discovered near a river, where the mob had abandoned her following the attack.
Authorities rescued her and rushed her to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), where she remains in critical condition.
The woman’s husband recounted the horrifying incident, claiming that around 25 people accused his wife of practicing witchcraft, blaming her for the ill health of others in the community.
“On Monday, some people approached me, accusing my wife of practicing witchcraft. When I protested against their baseless allegations, they forcefully entered our home, physically assaulted my wife, and subjected her to brutal torture. They then dragged her out and left her near the river,” he stated.
He identified three individuals as the primary culprits behind the attack, but they have reportedly fled the area.
Commenting on the case, Dibrugarh Additional Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Nirmal Ghosh suggested that the assault might have stemmed from a family feud.
“The incident is under investigation, and we are pursuing all leads to apprehend those responsible,” he added.
