Weakening BJP will hinder India’s global aspirations: Assam CM

Speaking at an event marking the BJP’s 46th foundation day, Sarma emphasised the party’s role as a driving force behind India’s progress on the world stage

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday asserted that any attempt to weaken the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would create “innumerable obstacles” in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader.

Speaking at an event marking the BJP’s 46th foundation day, Sarma emphasised the party’s role as a driving force behind India’s progress on the world stage.

“Undermining the BJP is not about targeting individuals. It is about weakening a powerful ideology rooted in national pride and unity,” Sarma said while addressing party workers in Guwahati.

He urged them to take a collective pledge to work towards India’s emergence as a global leader in the years ahead.

Declaring that the BJP will serve the nation “as long as the sun and moon exist,” Sarma reiterated his belief in the party’s enduring commitment to national service.

He warned that various forces would attempt to discredit the BJP, particularly through social media, and called on party members to counter misinformation with positive messaging.

On the symbolic significance of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, Sarma described its construction as more than just a religious project, calling it a milestone in overcoming “500 years of slavery.”

He further highlighted the party’s achievements, claiming key reforms and legislative breakthroughs—such as the abrogation of Article 370, the passage of the Waqf Bill, and the outlawing of triple talaq—would not have been possible without the BJP at the helm.

“Without BJP, the Northeast would not have witnessed the kind of development we see today,” he said.

The Chief Minister credited the party for making a substantial impact at all levels of governance in Assam, from autonomous councils to municipal and panchayat bodies, and said the BJP continues to uphold and elevate Assamese pride and identity.

Earlier in the day, Sarma and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia hoisted the party flag at the state headquarters in the presence of senior leaders and party workers.

Paying tribute to grassroots workers, Sarma said, “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the BJP has become a platform to realise the aspirations of every section of Indian society and to restore India’s ancient glory.”

He also claimed the BJP now surpasses the Communist Party of China in terms of total membership, adding, “The BJP has remained immune to dynastic politics. Unlike the Congress, which was turned into a family-run outfit under Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, the BJP continues to be a cadre-driven, people-centric party.”
