Guwahati: Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), was re-arrested by Dhekiajuli police on Wednesday, just a day after securing bail in a prior case.

Hoque had been detained on February 22, following allegations of accepting money to facilitate unfair means during the CBSE Class 12 Physics examination.

This initial arrest was part of a broader investigation into examination malpractices, which also led to the detention of five USTM professors.

The controversy surrounding Hoque intensified when Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly released a list of 209 students purportedly promised higher marks through fraudulent means.

Following his initial arrest, Hoque was granted bail by the Gauhati High Court on March 3.

However, his re-arrest on Wednesday, indicates ongoing legal challenges, with authorities yet to disclose the specific charges leading to this subsequent detention.

According to reports, Hoque has been taken to Tezpur for interrogation.

Hoque’s tenure at USTM has previously been marked by tensions with state authorities. Notably, he faced criticism from Assam chief minister, including allegations related to ‘flood jihad.’

The current legal proceedings have raised concerns about the integrity of the examination system and the broader educational framework in the region.

As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders await further details from the authorities to understand the full extent of the allegations and their implications for the academic community.
