Guwahati: The Union Cabinet has approved a bill to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, which will become the 22nd IIM in India and the second in the Northeast after Shillong.
The central government has allocated over Rs 500 crore for the project, which is intended to address a long-standing need for quality management education in the region.
This new IIM will enhance Guwahati’s position as a key education hub in the region, joining existing institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, National Law University and Judicial Academy, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari, Guwahati.
The new institute will provide high-quality management programs and research opportunities to students from across the country.
It will also attract talent, boost entrepreneurship, and support capacity-building in sectors critical to the region’s economic growth in particular and of the country in general.

Its establishment is part of a broader strategy to improve higher education infrastructure in the North East, aiming to bridge regional disparities in access to top-tier institutions and boost employability.
The bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament during the current session.
