GUWAHATI: The union cabinet committee on economic affairs has approved the multi-crore Guwahati Ring Road Project.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for this transformative effort.
The Guwahati Ring Road project in Assam, spanning 121 kilometers, will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 5729 crore under the Build-Operate-Toll (BOT) model.
“Excellent news. As the Union Cabinet approves the Rs 5,729 cr Guwahati Ring Road Project; Assam places on record its deepest appreciation to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and Hon’ble Union Minister Shri @nitin_gadkari ji for this transformative effort,” the chief minister posted on X.
The chief minister said the 121-km Ring Road has immense strategic importance and exemplifies the state government’s commitment to decongest and sustainably expand Guwahati.
The Guwahati Ring Road project in Assam comprises three major components.
Firstly, a new 56-kilometer, 4-lane Access-Controlled Northern Guwahati Bypass will be constructed.
Secondly, the existing 4-lane bypass on National Highway 27 (NH 27) will be widened to 6 lanes over an 8-kilometer stretch.
Lastly, enhancements will be made to the remaining 58 kilometers of the existing bypass on NH 27.
As transit through North East’s ‘Gateway City’ simplifies, it will have a multiplier effect on the region’s socio-economic development, Sarma said.
“This mega project once again underscores the utmost importance of the North East for the NDA. For us, until 2014 projects of such scale and scope were unthinkable. #ModiKiGuarantee isn’t just a slogan, it is a testament to relentless effort for building a Viksit Assam,” the chief minister said.
A significant highlight of this initiative is the inclusion of a major bridge over the Brahmaputra River, which will greatly improve connectivity across the region.
Upon completion, the Guwahati Ring Road in Assam will provide uninterrupted connectivity for long-distance traffic on NH 27, a crucial artery in the East-West Corridor.
