Guwahati: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the government would set up a urea plant at Namrup in Assam’s Dibrugarh district with an annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tons to further augment urea supply to farmers.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the Centre for announcing the establishment of a urea plant as part of the Union Budget 2025.
Taking to X, CM Sarma wrote, “What a historic day for Assam ! #UnionBudget2025 has announced a 12.7 lakh MT urea plant in Namrup, a long-standing demand of the people of Assam. After the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad, this urea facility will be a game changer for the entire North East.”

It will not only help us achieve self-sufficiency in fertilizer availability but also better channelise our natural gas resources, he said.
Sarma further stated, “On behalf of the people of Assam, my heartfelt gratitude to Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Ji.”
The shares of companies engaged in the fertilizer business rallied after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that a urea supply plant with an annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tons will be set up in Assam.
As part of the Rs 500 crore investment, the initiative will include two new nano urea plants, which will modernize existing facilities and boost production.
Sitharaman on Saturday presented her eighth consecutive Union Budget in the Lok Sabha.
