Guwahati: The NSCN(Yung Aung) and ULFA (Independent) have issued a joint statement urging people to abstain from participating in the Independence Day celebrations on August 15.
Both the proscribed groups have called for a total shutdown on Independence Day in Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh.
In a press release, the insurgent groups have urged all the freedom-loving Wesean citizens to observe a complete shutdown from midnight to 8:00 PM on Independence Day, adhering to the slogan “One People One Region One Vision.”
However, the emergency services, media, and religious activities have been exempted from the shutdown.
“This colonialist symbol is just to deceive the world and justify the illegal domination to continue suppression of the legitimate aspirations of the Wesean region. India is desperately trying to paint the picture of normalcy in the region which is only a myth. Beneath the veneer lies a harsh reality composed of brutal military oppression, endless human rights violations, and cruel assimilation policies,” the statement read.
It stated that the imposed Independence Day celebration has nothing to offer to the region except a ‘sorrowful reminder’ of another year under India’s brutal occupation. It added that it is an insult to the aspiration of the Wesean people who had sacrificed much for restoration of their lost sovereignty.
The statement further stated this day will continue to remain a ‘Black Day’ in the chapter of the Wesean revolution.
